Are Jacob and the smoke monster the same force in different forms? Or are they working together?
Or, and here's where I go out on a limb, is the monster the 'devil' to Jacob's 'God' persona? I do wonder whether the temple was built to contain it, rather than worship it. It's clearly more than a guard dog.

Hahah maybe! Lost hasn't been very subtle with the whole black / white thing so far... but we've never been told for definite that white is good and black is evil. We don't even know if ANYONE's the good guy here.
